Intro

Peter Gregson creates a soundworld that feels both ancient and futuristic. At its heart is the cello, but not as a solitary, weeping instrument. Instead, Gregson uses multitracking and subtle electronic processing to build entire orchestras out of a single voice. The result is a rich, enveloping texture that maintains the tactile, woody resonance of acoustic strings while embracing the expansive possibilities of modern studio production.

What sets him apart is his rhythmic clarity and his willingness to deconstruct the classics. His work often features a pulsing, minimalist heartbeat that makes the music feel active rather than passive. It is sophisticated without being aloof, providing a sophisticated backdrop for thought without demanding the listener's total submission. He finds the intersection where the rigor of classical training meets the emotional directness of a film score.

Start with 'Bach: The Cello Suites - Recomposed'. It is a masterclass in how to honor a legacy while completely reimagining its sonic architecture. From there, explore 'Flow' or 'Quartets' to hear his original compositions, which showcase his unique ability to blend analog synthesizers with traditional string techniques.

Peter Gregson (born 1987) is a cellist and composer. He was born in Edinburgh and was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and the Royal Academy of Music. Gregson composed the score for the 2015 film A Little Chaos, marking his first major film scoring job. Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair named it his favourite score of the year, dubbing it "a string-heavy stunner", though Dennis Harvey writing for Variety magazine described it as "clichéd, saccharine score". Gregson was interviewed as part of BBC Radio Ulster's Classical Connections with John Toal programme in May 2015. He arranged the cello cover of Charli XCX's "360" for Bridgerton season four on Netflix.
