Emerging from Blue Island, Illinois, Brown gained historical significance by releasing the first-ever gold-certified 12-inch single, 'Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me,' in 1977.

His sound identity is rooted in his background as a drummer and his early adoption of home recording technology; he famously recorded his breakthrough hits on a four-track reel-to-reel in his bedroom. This DIY ethos, combined with the sophisticated production of Cory Wade and the distribution power of TK Records, created a 'Miami Sound' that was more electronic and rhythmic than its Philadelphia or New York counterparts.
