Pale Waves emerged from the Manchester indie scene in 2014, quickly becoming the flagship act for the Dirty Hit label alongside The 1975. Their early sound, heavily influenced by 80s synth-pop and The Cure, was characterized by 'There's a Honey' and 'Television Romance', tracks that utilized clean, rhythmic guitar interlocking and lush synth pads.
As their career progressed, the band underwent significant stylistic evolutions. Their second album, 'Who Am I?' , pivoted toward a 90s/00s singer-songwriter and pop-punk aesthetic, citing influences like Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch, while 'Unwanted' leaned further into aggressive, distorted alternative rock. Their 2024 release 'Smitten' represents a return to their indie-pop roots, emphasizing the dreamier, jangling elements of their debut. Critically, they are noted for their ability to blend mainstream pop sensibilities with a cohesive gothic subculture identity. They occupy a unique cultural space as a bridge between high-fashion 'sad girl' aesthetics and radio-ready guitar pop, maintaining a dedicated fanbase through themes of LGBTQ+ identity and emotional transparency.
