Overdrive

Overdrive is a foundational pillar of the Swedish Heavy Metal (FWOSHM) scene, formed in 1980 in Karlshamn. Their sound identity is deeply rooted in the twin-guitar harmonies popularized by Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden, but infused with a distinctly Scandinavian sharpness.

The band's early career was marked by cult classics like 'Metal Attack' and 'Swords and Axes', which positioned them alongside peers like Heavy Load and Gotham City as leaders of the regional movement. After a significant hiatus following their 1985 split, the band's 2003 reformation proved to be more than a nostalgia act, resulting in a string of well-received modern albums that maintained their traditionalist ethos while benefiting from 21st-century production clarity. Guitarist Janne Stark is a notable figure in the community, not only for his playing but for his work as a metal historian. Critically, the band is respected for their refusal to pivot toward trendier subgenres, remaining a 'pure' heavy metal entity for over four decades.
