Ostrogoth stands as the cornerstone of the Belgian heavy metal scene, specifically the 'Belgian Steel' movement of the early 1980s. Formed in Ghent in 1980, they became the flagship artist for Mausoleum Records, a label instrumental in documenting the European metal underground.

Their sound identity is firmly rooted in the traditional heavy metal of the era, drawing significant influence from the Scorpions' melodicism and Accept's rhythmic punch, while maintaining a raw edge reminiscent of the NWOBHM. The band's career is marked by several distinct phases, most notably the 'Red Star' De Brauwer era which produced their most celebrated works, 'Full Moon's Eyes' and 'Ecstasy and Danger'. Despite frequent line-up changes and a hiatus beginning in 1988, their influence persisted through the tape-trading underground. Critically, they are regarded as 'cult' legends who prioritized atmosphere and anthemic songwriting over commercial polish. Their 2010s resurgence and the release of 'Last Tribe Standing' solidified their status as survivors of the original metal wave, maintaining a loyal following among crate-diggers and traditional metal purists.
