Orthodox Celts

High-energy Irish folk rock born in Belgrade. Raspy vocals, lightning-fast banjos, and pub-ready anthems that bridge the Balkans and the Emerald Isle.

Intro

Orthodox Celts deliver a shot of pure, unadulterated adrenaline disguised as traditional Irish music. While they hail from Serbia, their sound is more authentic to the spirit of a Dublin pub than many bands from the island itself. It is a raucous, foot-stomping blend of traditional acoustic instruments like the tin whistle and bodhran, reinforced by the driving backbeat of a rock band. The energy is infectious, moving effortlessly from sentimental ballads to high-speed jigs.

What truly sets them apart is the 'Aca Seltik' vocal delivery: a weathered, gravelly baritone that sounds like it has been cured in tobacco and stout. There is a specific Balkan intensity layered over the Celtic melodies, a sense of shared history and struggle that makes their interpretation of Irish culture feel deeply personal rather than like a novelty act. The interplay between the fiddle and the banjo provides a melodic density that rivals any punk band for sheer power.

Start with 'Green Roses' to hear them at their peak of popularity and songwriting. It captures the perfect balance between their traditional roots and their rock sensibilities. If you want something more aggressive, their later work like 'One, Two... Five' leans harder into the 'rock' side of the folk-rock equation while keeping the Celtic soul intact.

Orthodox Celts is a Serbian band formed in Belgrade in 1992 which plays Irish folk music combined with rock elements. Despite their uncharacteristic genre in their home country, the band has been one of the top acts of the Serbian rock scene since their formation, and has influenced a number of younger Serbian bands, most notably Irish Stew of Sindidun and Tir na n'Og. The band started their career performing traditional Irish songs and, gradually, introduced more and more of their own material (lyrics mostly written by the band's frontman Aleksandar "Aca Seltik" Petrović, music mostly written by band's violinist Ana Đokić). All their lyrics are in English, but the group has composed some purely instrumental songs as well. They traditionally celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a large concert in Belgrade. The group has released six studio albums to date.
