Intro

Formed in Biella, Italy in 1988, Opera IX is a foundational pillar of the Italian occult black metal scene. Led by guitarist Ossian, the band's evolution is marked by a transition from early thrash-influenced demos to a sophisticated, symphonic style that incorporates doom, folk, and gothic elements.

The band gained significant international attention during the tenure of vocalist Cadaveria, whose commanding and versatile performance style defined their most celebrated era. Their 2000 album, 'The Black Opera', is widely considered a masterpiece of the symphonic black metal subgenre, noted for its ambitious length and integration of darkwave influences like Bauhaus. Following the departure of Cadaveria and Flegias (who formed the band Cadaveria), Opera IX shifted toward a more pagan-oriented sound on 'Maleventum', though they maintained their signature atmospheric density. Critically, they are respected for their ability to maintain a 'Mediterranean' dark aesthetic - one that is distinct from the colder, more sterile sounds of Northern European black metal - by emphasizing melody, ritualistic pacing, and lush keyboard arrangements.
