Intro

On Broken Wings sounds like the exact moment a high-tension wire snaps. Their music is a volatile mixture of early 2000s metalcore aggression and a deeply unsettling, atmospheric gloom. One moment you are submerged in a thick, murky sludge of down-tuned guitars and rhythmic 'moshcore' breakdowns; the next, the noise clears to reveal a fragile, haunting melody that feels like it might shatter at any second. It is music that feels physically heavy, designed to fill a room with a sense of impending collision.

What truly distinguishes the band is the vocal elasticity of Jonathan Blake and the band's willingness to embrace silence and texture. Unlike their more straightforward peers, they use feedback and ambient space as weapons, creating a 'haunted' quality that lingers between the screams. The transition from guttural, demonic growls to sensitive, breathy singing isn't just a gimmick; it mirrors the lyrical oscillation between outward hostility and inward desolation.

To understand their impact, start with 'Some of Us May Never See the World.' It captures the raw, unhinged energy of the Boston scene while showcasing the experimental, post-emo leanings that made them a cult favorite. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who wants their heavy music to feel both dangerous and deeply, uncomfortably human.

On Broken Wings is an American metalcore band from Boston, Massachusetts, that formed in 2001. Often credited with pioneering the sound, and coining the term, of "moshcore" a term originally used by the band to describe their fusion of metal with elements of post-hardcore and hardcore breakdowns. AllMusic described their style as post-emo metalcore with elements of grindcore. After the self-released Number One Beautiful EP, they caught the attention of Eulogy Recordings, where they released two albums over the next five years, 2003's Some of Us May Never See the World and 2005's It's All a Long Goodbye. In early 2007, On Broken Wings released an EP entitled Going Down, which contained the original Number One Beautiful EP as well as four new songs.
