Omni

Jittery, interlocking guitar lines and deadpan vocals that feel like a perfectly timed watch. Sharp, minimalist post-punk for focused movement.

Intro

Omni sounds like the inner workings of a mechanical clock if it were made of electric guitars and nervous energy. Their music is defined by a 'wiry' aesthetic where every instrument has its own distinct, jagged space in the mix. There is no fuzz or blur here; instead, you get clean, brittle tones and rhythms that lock together like a complex puzzle. It is music that feels both highly disciplined and slightly anxious.

What truly sets them apart is their commitment to the 'less is more' philosophy of late 70s art-punk. While many modern post-punk bands lean into gloom and heavy reverb, Omni keeps things dry, bright, and rhythmically inventive. The interplay between the bass and guitar is conversational, often skipping and jumping in unexpected intervals that keep the listener constantly engaged without ever feeling chaotic.

Start with their debut album, Deluxe. It perfectly captures their signature sound: short, punchy tracks that deliver high-impact hooks through precision rather than volume. It is the ideal entry point for anyone who loves the intellectual rigor of Wire or the rhythmic playfulness of Talking Heads but wants something that feels distinctly modern.

Omni is an American post-punk band from Atlanta. The band currently consists of Philip Frobos on vocals and bass, Frankie Broyles on guitar and keyboard, and Chris Yonker on drums. Broyles was previously a member of Deerhunter and Balkans; Yonker was previously a member of Greenscreen; Frobos was previously a member of Carnivores. Their sound is influenced by post-punk bands like Television, Talking Heads, and Wire, with "mathematical" rhythms and "wiry guitar chords, nervy basslines, and jolting beats." The band's first album, Deluxe, was released in 2016 on indie label Trouble in Mind Records to positive reviews. Their second album, Multi-Task, followed in 2017 and received positive reviews as well, including a 7.6 rating from Pitchfork. In 2019, Omni signed to Sub Pop, and released their third album, Networker, later that year. This album was also appreciated by critics. In his review, Chris Ingalls at PopMatters wrote that the band had "managed to pull off the difficult trick of dragging an older, established subgenre into the current musical climate skillfully and effectively." Drew Schwartz from Vice called them "the best post-punk band in America". In 2024, the band released Souvenir, which has also received positive reviews.
