Obscurity

Obscurity is a foundational pillar of the German Viking and Pagan metal scene, hailing from Velbert. Formed in 1997, they have carved out a unique niche by intentionally eschewing the 'folk' instrumentation (keyboards, violins, flutes) common in the genre.

Instead, they utilize traditional metal instruments to create 'hymn-like' melodies, a stylistic choice that aligns them more closely with the melodic death metal of Amon Amarth or the black/death fusion of Dissection. Their career is marked by a fierce commitment to artistic independence, having self-financed and self-produced their work for over a decade before signing distribution deals. Musically, they evolved from a raw black/death foundation into a more polished, epic sound that emphasizes production clarity without sacrificing underground grit. Their lyrical focus centers on Norse mythology and the history of their home region, the Bergisches Land. Critically, they are respected for their consistency and their ability to bridge the gap between the melodic accessibility of the 'Viking' trend and the technical aggression of thrash and death metal.
