Nullsleep

Aggressive, high-energy anthems squeezed out of vintage Game Boys. It is digital grit and neon-soaked melodies for the post-cyberpunk underground.

Intro

Nullsleep creates a sound that is simultaneously nostalgic and futuristic, using the limited sound chips of 8-bit hardware to produce surprisingly massive, distorted electronic music. It feels like a high-speed chase through a pixelated cityscape, where the bright, melodic square waves are constantly being threatened by waves of digital noise and industrial-tinged percussion. The music carries a distinct 'low-bit' weight, where every sound has a sharp, jagged edge that cuts through the mix.

What sets this apart from standard video game music is the 'post-cyberpunk' ethos. Instead of just making catchy tunes, Jeremiah Johnson pushes the hardware to its breaking point, embracing data corruption and destructive processing. The result is a wall of sound that feels more like a warehouse rave or an industrial club set than a living room gaming session. It is the sound of technology being repurposed and pushed into emotional, high-stakes territory.

For those new to the sound, 'Electric Heart Strike' is the essential starting point. It perfectly captures the balance between pop sensibility and aggressive electronic production. It is music for people who find beauty in the glitch, energy in the limitation, and a sense of rebellion in the hum of a cheap plastic device.

Jeremiah Johnson (born October 7, 1980), better known as Nullsleep, is an American electronic musician and computer artist currently residing in New York City. In 1999 he co-founded the low-bit art collective 8bitpeoples, and has served as its lead director since its inception. He is best known for his high-energy Game Boy pop songs. Johnson graduated from the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University in 2003, where he studied computer science and music. He uses Game Boys and NES consoles to create music.
