Polished Mediterranean grooves where Italo-disco energy meets sophisticated smooth jazz. Shimmering synths and breathy vocals for high-end late-night lounging.
Novecento sounds like the intersection of a high-fashion runway and a sunset beach club in 1985. Their music is characterized by a sleek, expensive-sounding production that blends the rhythmic pulse of Italo-disco with the harmonic complexity of contemporary jazz. It is music that feels perpetually golden-hour, draped in shimmering synthesizer pads, clean electric guitar lines, and a rhythm section that knows exactly when to lean into a funk groove.
What makes them truly distinctive is the Nicolosi family's ability to transition from pure electronic pop to sophisticated jazz-fusion without losing their melodic core. While many of their contemporaries stayed in the dance-pop lane, Novecento integrated live instrumentation and complex arrangements that appealed to serious audiophiles. The vocals of Dora Carofiglio provide a soft, ethereal anchor that makes even their most technical jazz excursions feel accessible and romantic.
Start with 'Dreamland' for the perfect distillation of their 80s sophisti-pop peak. If you prefer their more rhythmic, dance-oriented roots, 'Movin' On' is an essential piece of Italian pop history. For those seeking their later, more mature jazz-fusion sound, the 'Featuring...' album showcases their collaborations with international jazz legends, proving their technical mettle.
Novecento is an Italian band founded by Pino Nicolosi, Lino Nicolosi, Rossana Nicolosi, and Dora Nicolosi (née Carofiglio) in 1984. Their music has gone through a variety of genres, such as Italo disco (early work), synthpop, soft rock, pop rock, jazz, and funk. The band was active in the 1980s and the 1990s and became popular with the debut single, "Movin' On", which sold more than 100,000 copies in 1984. The band went on to win the "Revelation of the Year" award during the national television event Azzurro 1984. They were signed to Italian Five Records and Baby Records, with international distribution via WEA, Warner Music, and ZTT. In 1990 they scored another hit with the eurodance song "I Need Love". After recording seven albums, Novecento disbanded in 1997. They briefly reunited in 2002 and again in 2008, when they scored significant success with the single "Cry".
