Night School

Formed in San Francisco in 2013, Night School emerged from the creative partnership of Alexandra Morte (formerly of Whirr and Camera Shy) and Baylie Arin. The project was initially conceived as a rapid-fire exploration of 'bliss rock,' famously recording their debut EP 'Heart Beat' in a single six-hour session with producer Jack Shirley.

This efficiency defined their early sound: a lean, punchy take on shoegaze that prioritized melodic clarity over aimless feedback. Their sound identity is deeply rooted in the harmonic structures of 1960s girl groups, transposed into a contemporary indie-rock context. Throughout their evolution, from the garage-leaning 'Blush' to the more polished textures of 'Invoke,' they have maintained a consistent aesthetic of 'sad love songs' wrapped in reverb. Positioned within the Graveface Records orbit, they bridge the gap between the aggressive wall-of-sound typical of the Bay Area shoegaze scene and the more delicate, pop-focused dream pop of the early 2010s. Critical consensus highlights their ability to maintain emotional intimacy despite dense production, often citing Morte's vocal arrangements as their primary distinguishing factor.
