Intimate, keyboard-driven pop that feels like a shared secret. Soft electronic beats and breathy vocals create a warm, private world for quiet afternoons.
New Buffalo sounds like the quietest corner of a sunny room. It is music built on the delicate interplay between vintage keyboard melodies and Sally Seltmann's whisper-soft, double-tracked vocals. The production often feels like a high-quality home recording, retaining a sense of intimacy and tactile warmth that studio polish usually buffs away. It is sophisticated without being cold, using subtle electronic pulses to ground its airy, melodic structures.
What makes this project distinctive is the way it bridges the gap between 1960s sunshine pop and modern indie-electronic sensibilities. While many of her contemporaries leaned into folk or rock, Seltmann prioritized the Casio keyboard and the drum machine, creating a sound that is both whimsical and deeply grounded in classic songwriting. There is a specific 'Melbourne' quality to the music: understated, artistic, and unhurried.
Start with 'The Last Beautiful Day' to experience the project's peak creative isolation. It is an album that captures a specific moment in the mid-2000s when indie pop was discovering its heart through minimalist electronics. It is the perfect companion for anyone who finds beauty in the small, domestic details of life.
