Neko

Neko is a French instrumental trio formed in Lille around 2003. Emerging during the global boom of post-rock, the band frequently found themselves compared to acts like Mogwai and Mono, though they personally cited influences closer to The Cure and The Smashing Pumpkins.

This tension between 'post-rock' labels and 'alternative rock' roots defines their sound identity: a mix of cinematic atmosphere and structured, rhythmic songwriting. Their early work, specifically the 'Explicit Lyrics' demo and 'Ghost Tracks' EP, established them as a key fixture in the Northern French and Belgian indie scenes. A significant pivot occurred in 2007 when the band began heavily experimenting with guitar loops to expand their sonic palette without adding members. This evolution culminated in 'One Hit Wonder!' (2009), which showcased a more layered, texture-focused approach. Beyond studio releases, their work on the film soundtrack for 'Les Somnambules' highlights their inherent cinematic quality. Critically, they are viewed as a 'musician's band,' respected for their restraint and their ability to build tension through repetition rather than volume.
