Nation of Language

Warm analog synths and motorik beats that feel like a midnight train ride through a neon-lit city. Heartfelt new wave for the modern romantic.

Intro

Nation of Language sounds like the best parts of 1982 filtered through a 21st-century lens of urban isolation and earnest longing. Their music is built on a foundation of warm, humming analog synthesizers and the steady, hypnotic pulse of vintage drum machines. It is music that feels both expansive and deeply intimate, like a private conversation happening in a crowded club.

What truly distinguishes them is the interplay between Ian Devaney’s soaring, emotive baritone and the band’s commitment to 'motorik' rhythms. While many synth-pop acts lean into robotic coldness, Nation of Language finds a profound humanity in the machines. The basslines are often the melodic lead, driving the songs forward with a post-punk urgency that prevents the lush synth pads from becoming too static.

Start with their debut, 'Introduction, Presence', to hear the blueprint of their sound. It captures a specific kind of 'modern nostalgia' that appeals to anyone who grew up on Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark but lives in the frantic, digital present. It is the perfect soundtrack for movement, whether you are commuting through a city or just trying to outrun your own thoughts.

Nation of Language is an American indie pop band that formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2016. The group consists of Ian Richard Devaney (lead vocals, guitar, synthesizer, percussion), Aidan Noell (synthesizer, backing vocals), and Alex MacKay (bass guitar). Michael Sue-Poi was the bassist prior to the band's 2022 tour.
