Ethereal Scandinavian folk meets the icy chill of black metal. Haunting choral vocals and traditional instruments layered over atmospheric, heavy textures.
Myrkur sounds like the intersection of a medieval cathedral and a frozen Nordic forest. It is music that feels ancient and modern simultaneously, moving from the delicate, high-register purity of Amalie Bruun's vocals to the sudden, crushing weight of black metal distortion. The atmosphere is consistently thick with reverb, creating a sense of vast, open space that is both beautiful and slightly threatening.
What makes this project distinctive is the seamless integration of traditional Scandinavian instruments like the nyckelharpa and the use of 'kulning' (ancient herding calls) within a contemporary metal framework. Bruun does not just blend genres; she inhabits a specific cultural lineage, treating black metal as a natural extension of the dark, pagan themes found in old Danish folk songs. The transition from delicate acoustic arrangements to wall-of-sound intensity feels like a seasonal shift rather than a stylistic jump.
Start with the album 'M' if you want to experience the full spectrum of her black metal and folk fusion. If you prefer a purely acoustic, haunting experience, 'Folkesange' strips away the distortion to focus on the raw beauty of the traditional melodies and Bruun's exceptional vocal control.
Myrkur is a musical project led by Danish singer Amalie Bruun which combines folk rock and black metal. Initially, the real-life identity of the person behind the project was not disclosed but Bruun’s name has since been revealed. Myrkur has released four full-length studio albums to significant critical acclaim, as well as a live album and two EP. Her most recent album, Spine, was released on 20 October 2023 through Relapse Records. The name of the project comes from an Icelandic (and Faroese) word meaning "darkness." The musical influences of Myrkur range from traditional Scandinavian folk to the black metal genre. New releases from Myrkur have tended towards embracing folk music traditions, with Bruun's 2020 album Folkesange being overwhelming folk-inspired and lacking the black metal sound that characterized the artist's earlier releases. Folkesange contains narrative "story-songs" performed on instruments appropriate to the ancient pagan folk music that Bruun included within the album, alongside modern original compositions as well.
