My Passion, formed in Hitchin in 2005, represents a specific inflection point in the UK alternative scene where the 'emo' and 'screamo' aesthetics of the mid-2000s began to merge with industrial and synth-pop influences. Their sound identity is characterized by a 'metallic punk' foundation heavily augmented by electronic programming, glitch effects, and theatrical vocal performances.
Led by Laurence René and Jonathan Gaskin, the band cultivated a highly visual, DIY-driven identity that resonated with the MySpace-era 'scene' culture, eventually amassing a dedicated following known as the 'My Passion Army.' Their career arc saw them move from independent releases on their own Style Suicide label to a major-indie deal with Spinefarm Records. Critically, they were often grouped with the 'electro-rock' wave of the late 2000s alongside acts like InnerPartySystem and Enter Shikari, though My Passion maintained a more glam-influenced, theatrical edge. Their influence is most felt in the way they bridged the gap between guitar-driven rock and the electronic dance elements that would become standard in 2010s alternative music.
