Intro

Mustard Plug delivers a quintessential blast of third-wave ska-punk that feels like a permanent summer afternoon. Their sound is defined by the sharp contrast between clean, rhythmic guitar upstrokes and heavy, distorted punk rock choruses, all propelled by a relentless brass section that provides both melodic hooks and percussive punch. It is music that refuses to take itself too seriously while maintaining a high level of technical tightness.

What sets them apart is their midwestern grit and a specific brand of self-deprecating humor. While many of their contemporaries leaned into pop-punk polish or hardcore aggression, Mustard Plug maintained a balance of 'everyman' relatability and frantic energy. The vocals are distinctively nasal and conversational, cutting through the dense layer of trumpets and trombones with stories of suburban boredom, beer, and social friction.

Start with 'Evildoers Beware!' to hear the band at their commercial and creative peak. It captures the frantic, infectious spirit of the late-90s ska boom without losing the raw edge of their Grand Rapids roots. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who wants to understand why ska-punk became a global phenomenon.

Mustard Plug is an American ska punk band from Grand Rapids, Michigan, consisting of Dave Kirchgessner (vocals), Brandon Jenison (trumpet), Jim Hofer (trombone), Nate Cohn (drums), Colin Clive (guitar/vocals), Mark Petz (tenor saxophone) and Greg Witulski (bass). Formed in 1991, the band has regularly toured throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and South America. They have toured with the Warped Tour twice, and participated in the Ska Against Racism Tour. As of 2024, the band has released eight studio albums and continues to tour actively. Explaining the band's goal, Jim Hofer said, "We may have some messages in our music, but essentially we just do this because we love it and we want people to lighten up and have fun."
