Murray Head

Theatrical art-pop that balances high-drama vocals with slick 80s production. Sophisticated, slightly cynical, and deeply cinematic music for the urban night.

Intro

Murray Head occupies a unique space where the grandeur of the West End meets the sleek pulse of 1980s new wave. His music feels inherently cinematic, often sounding like the pivotal scene in a film you haven't seen yet. There is a polished, expensive quality to the production, featuring shimmering synths and sharp orchestral flourishes that frame his remarkably versatile voice.

What truly sets him apart is his background as an actor. He doesn't just sing songs; he inhabits roles. Whether he is delivering the rapid-fire, cynical commentary of a world-weary traveler or the soul-baring intensity of a rock opera protagonist, there is a narrative weight to every line. His delivery often shifts between conversational spoken-word and powerful, soaring choruses, creating a sense of dynamic tension that keeps the listener engaged.

To understand his range, start with the iconic 'One Night in Bangkok' for his masterclass in rhythmic, snarky pop, then pivot to 'Say It Ain't So Joe' to hear his capacity for raw, political melancholy. He is the perfect artist for listeners who appreciate pop music with a high IQ and a flair for the dramatic.

Murray Seafield St George Head (born 5 March 1946) is an English actor and singer. Head has appeared in a number of films, including a starring role as the character Bob Elkin in the BAFTA award winning and Oscar-nominated 1971 film Sunday Bloody Sunday. As a musician, he is most recognised for his international hit songs "Superstar" (from the 1970 rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar) and "One Night in Bangkok" (the 1984 single from the musical Chess, which topped the charts in various countries). He has been involved in several projects since the 1960s and continues to record music, perform concerts, and make appearances on television either as himself or as a character actor.
