High-octane Swedish rap colliding with 1930s big band swing. Explosive brass sections and Django-style guitar meet modern hip-hop beats for a non-stop urban carnival.
Imagine a 1930s speakeasy that somehow got transported to a modern-day Swedish block party. The music of Movits! is a high-speed collision between the golden age of swing and the sharp, rhythmic delivery of contemporary hip-hop. It is defined by its infectious energy, led by a powerhouse horn section that provides the melodic backbone for rapid-fire Swedish vocals. The production is crisp and bright, blending live instrumentation with modern electronic pulses.
What truly sets them apart is the 'Django guitar' influence, bringing a Roma swing flavor that adds a sophisticated, vintage grit to the boom-bap foundations. While the lyrics are in Swedish, the rhythmic pocket is so deep and the brass arrangements so triumphant that the language barrier vanishes. It feels both nostalgic and futuristic, like a black-and-white film colorized with neon lights.
Start with 'Äppelknyckarjazz' to hear the foundational blend that launched them, or dive into 'Fel del av gården' for the perfect distillation of their swing-rap alchemy. It is the ultimate soundtrack for moments that require high energy, sharp wit, and a touch of theatrical flair.
Movits! (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈmǔːvɪts]) is a Swedish music group from Luleå. The group plays swing mixed with hip hop. Their debut album Äppelknyckarjazz, literally translated as Apple swiper jazz or scrumping jazz, was released in November 2008 and has been recognized by national Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter. The name Movits! alludes to Fader Movitz, a character in the Epistles of Fredman by Swedish 18th-century poet and composer Carl Michael Bellman. The band, however, replaced the last character of the name z with an s in order to avoid being associated with Swedish bands playing dansband style music, such as Lasse Stefanz, Svänzons or Larz-Kristerz. On July 27, 2009, Movits! was featured on the American satirical news show The Colbert Report. The band was interviewed and performed their song "Fel del av gården". Colbert mentioned on his show on 30 July 2009, that the band's album Äppelknyckarjazz recently had gained significant popularity on Amazon.com and claimed that their appearance on his program was significantly responsible for their newfound popularity (referred to as "The Colbert Bump"). The band is made up of brothers Johan Jivin' Rensfeldt (vocals), Anders Rensfeldt (multi-instrumentalist and DJ) and saxophonist Joakim 'One-Take' Nilsson.
