Mono Puff is the primary side project of John Flansburgh, established in 1993 during a period of expansion for his main outfit, They Might Be Giants. While TMBG is often characterized by its duo-centric, eclectic nerd-rock, Mono Puff was conceived as a more traditional, albeit quirky, band unit.
The core trio of Flansburgh, Hal Cragin, and Steve Calhoon focused on a sound rooted in power pop, funk, and alternative rock, emphasizing a 'groove' that was often absent from Flansburgh's primary work. The project served as a creative outlet for songs that felt too 'rock' or 'soul-influenced' for the Giants' catalog. Across two full-length albums, 'Unsupervised' (1996) and 'It's Fun to Steal' (1998), the band explored themes of urban malaise, petty crime, and surreal character studies. Critically, Mono Puff is viewed as a high-water mark for 90s indie side projects, praised for its high production values and the chemistry of its rhythm section.
