Gritty, soul-drenched street anthems from the heart of the Bay Area. Heavy bass, sharp lyricism, and a slumped tempo for late night drives through the city.
This is the definitive sound of Northern California street rap at the turn of the millennium. It is characterized by a specific 'slump' - a heavy, rhythmic lean that feels both urgent and laid back. The production often leans on soulful, melancholic samples that provide a cinematic backdrop for raw, unfiltered storytelling about survival and loyalty.
What sets them apart is the chemistry between the five members, particularly the contrast between The Jacka's philosophical, gravelly delivery and Husalah's high-energy, unpredictable flow. They moved away from the cartoonish elements of earlier gangsta rap toward something more soulful, weary, and authentic, often referred to as 'Mob Music.'
Start with their 1999 self-titled debut, C-Bo's Mob Figaz. It captures a pivotal moment in West Coast history where the production of Rob-Lo met a new generation of lyricists who would go on to define the Bay Area independent scene for decades.
Mob Figaz is a Bay Area hip hop group formed by C-Bo in 1997. The members consist of Husalah, Rydah J. Klyde, and The Jacka from Pittsburg; Fed-X from Richmond; and AP.9 from Oakland, California. Their first album, C-Bo's Mob Figaz, was a minor success, reaching #63 on Billboard's Top R&B Albums chart. On February 2, 2015, Mob Figaz member The Jacka was fatally shot by an unidentified gunman in Oakland.
