Mingus Big Band

Explosive, polyphonic big band energy that feels like a New York City street corner at midnight. Intense, soulful, and brilliantly chaotic jazz for the restless.

Intro

Listening to the Mingus Big Band is like stepping into the middle of a high-speed intersection in Manhattan where every car is a virtuoso horn player. It is loud, dense, and unapologetically alive. The music carries the ghost of Charles Mingus, but it breathes with a modern, muscular vitality that refuses to be a museum piece. You will hear gospel shouts, bluesy moans, and avant-garde shrieks all competing for space within meticulously complex arrangements.

What sets this ensemble apart is the 'organized chaos' of the arrangements. Unlike the polite precision of traditional swing bands, this group thrives on friction. The brass sections don't just play together; they weave, collide, and roar. It captures the specific Mingus philosophy where individual expression is just as important as the collective roar, resulting in a sound that is both intellectually demanding and physically overwhelming.

Start with 'Nostalgia in Times Square' to hear how they transform a classic theme into a living, breathing urban anthem. If you want something more aggressive, 'Gunslinging Birds' showcases the band's ability to navigate high-speed, jagged rhythms with terrifying precision. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who thinks big band music is a thing of the past.

Mingus Big Band is a 14-piece ensemble, based in New York City, that specializes in the compositions of Charles Mingus. It was managed by his widow, Sue Mingus, along with Mingus Orchestra and Mingus Dynasty. In addition to its weekly Wednesday night appearance at DROM NYC in New York City, Mingus Big Band tours frequently, giving performances and clinics in America, Europe, and other parts of the world. The band has received seven Grammy Award nominations and won a Grammy in 2011 for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album for Mingus Big Band Live at Jazz Standard.
