Gritty, high-octane soul that bridges the gap between the Saturday night barroom and the Sunday morning pulpit. Powerful, brass-heavy roots music with a heartbeat.
Mike Farris sounds like a man who has seen the bottom and decided to sing his way back to the top. His music is a rich, humid blend of Stax-era soul, New Orleans gospel, and Tennessee blues. It is anchored by a voice that is both weathered and soaring, possessing a gravelly texture that can break into a triumphant, glass-shattering belt at a moment's notice. The production often feels like a live revival meeting, complete with swelling Hammond organs, punchy horn sections, and backing choirs that provide a lush, communal bed for his personal narratives.
What truly distinguishes Farris is his ability to strip the 'religious' baggage from gospel music, leaving only the raw, universal human emotion. He treats the spiritual tradition as a sonic vocabulary for resilience and recovery. While his roots are in the blues-rock of the Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies, his solo work is far more sophisticated, utilizing the precision of Nashville's finest session players to create a sound that feels both impeccably crafted and dangerously spontaneous.
Start with 'Salvation in Lights' to hear the definitive blueprint of his sound. It captures the exact moment his rock-and-roll grit met the sanctified power of the brass band. From there, move to 'Silver & Stone' for a more modern, polished take on the soul-blues tradition that highlights his growth as a songwriter and his enduring vocal power.
