Lush, high-fidelity synth landscapes that bridge the gap between 80s pop and spiritual mystery. Polished, cinematic, and deeply atmospheric electronic music.
The music of Michael Cretu feels like a high-definition dream of the future recorded in a 14th-century cathedral. It is characterized by an incredible sense of space, achieved through meticulous digital production and heavy use of reverb that makes every synth lead and vocal line feel like it is echoing through a vast, empty hall. There is a sleek, expensive quality to the sound that is unmistakably European, blending the cold precision of German electronic music with a romantic, almost gothic sensibility.
What truly sets Cretu apart is his ability to layer sound. He doesn't just write melodies; he constructs sonic environments. You will hear breathy, whispered vocals that feel like they are being shared as a secret, punctuated by sharp, gated drum hits and shimmering digital textures. His work often incorporates unexpected samples, from Gregorian chants to ethnic instruments, creating a sense of global mystery that feels both ancient and cutting-edge.
To understand his solo evolution before the global Enigma phenomenon, start with Die Chinesische Mauer. It captures the peak of his 1980s synth-pop craftsmanship, featuring the hit Samurai. It is the perfect entry point for those who love the melodic hooks of the era but want something with more intellectual weight and atmospheric depth.
Michael Cretu (Romanian: Mihai Crețu, pronounced [miˈhaj ˈkretsu]; born 18 May 1957) is a Romanian-German musician, singer, songwriter, composer, and record producer. He gained worldwide fame as the founder and musician behind the musical project Enigma, which he formed in 1990. Cretu began his music career in 1976 as a solo artist, releasing three studio albums as well as writing and producing albums for his then-wife, German pop singer Sandra. He also worked with other artists through the 1980s, including Peter Cornelius, Hubert Kah, and Mike Oldfield. Cretu was sometimes identified as "Curly" or "Curly M.C.", in reference to his curly hair and creț meaning "curly" in Romanian. He scored an unexpected worldwide commercial hit with the debut Enigma album, MCMXC a.D. (1990), helped by its lead single, "Sadeness (Part I)". The project's most recent album is 2016's The Fall of a Rebel Angel, its eighth overall. Enigma has sold an estimated 70 million albums worldwide, and Cretu's produced recordings have sold 100 million copies.
