Raw, proto-epic doom metal with operatic vocals and a gritty basement feel. Heavy riffs that crawl through the fog of 1980s underground Sweden.
MeRCY (primarily the Swedish entity led by Andrija Veljaca) occupies a critical but often overlooked position in the evolution of doom metal. Formed in the early 1980s, the band served as the initial platform for vocalist Messiah Marcolin before his rise to fame with Candlemass.
Their sound is a bridge between the traditional heavy metal of the late 70s and the 'Epic Doom' style that would later define the Swedish scene. Sonically, they are defined by a 'proto-epic' quality: combining the slow, crushing tempos of Black Sabbath with a more theatrical, vibrato-laden vocal approach. Despite numerous lineup changes and a move toward more aggressive, thrash-influenced sounds in later years, their early output remains their most influential. The band's history is marked by a cult status, often overshadowed by their contemporaries but respected by crate-diggers for their uncompromisingly raw production and unique vision of dark, spiritual metal. The project effectively ended with Veljaca's death in 2005.
