Dusty, soulful deep house that feels like a late-night record shop find. Warm analog textures and MPC-swung rhythms for the discerning dance floor.
Medlar crafts a specific kind of electronic music that feels lived-in and tactile. It is deep house that prioritizes the 'deep' over the 'house,' drawing heavily from the crate-digging aesthetics of hip-hop and the soulful grit of early Detroit and Chicago records. The sound is defined by a certain fuzziness, a warmth that suggests the tracks were recorded through vintage gear and mastered to tape. It is music that respects the silence between the beats as much as the beats themselves.
What sets him apart is his rhythmic sensibility, likely a carryover from his early days in drum and bass. His percussion doesn't just sit on a grid; it swings and breathes, often feeling like a live drummer playing a machine. He has a knack for finding the perfect three-second vocal or piano loop and stretching it into an immersive, hypnotic environment that never feels repetitive, only meditative.
Start with his debut album 'Sleep' to understand his foundational approach to atmosphere. From there, move to his more recent work like 'Islands' to hear how he has refined his production into something more expansive and cinematic. It is the perfect soundtrack for those hours when the sun is down but the energy is still humming.
Medlar is the stage name of the British deep house producer Ned Pegler (born 1985 or 1986). His first releases were published in 2010 under his alias Klic on his co-owned label Hit and Hope. Since 2011 he releases under the London-based Wolf Music label. He is influenced by Chicago house, Detroit techno, disco and hip hop, but started his career as Drum and Bass DJ in Brighton around 2003 or 2005. Due to an internship at the Brighton-based Label Mr Bongo Records he came in contact with House music and also the later label boss of Wolf Music, Matt Wolf. There he released his first track, "Terrell", in 2011.
