Intro

Formed in Los Angeles in 1990 by multi-instrumentalist Brad Laner, Medicine emerged as the premier American exponent of the shoegaze movement. While contemporaries like My Bloody Valentine focused on pitch-bending and 'glide guitar,' Laner utilized his background in experimental music and drumming to create a more rhythmic, abrasive sound.

The band's signature was established through Laner's use of a Yamaha MT100 8-track recorder to overload guitar signals, resulting in a distinctive, 'shattered' distortion. Their debut, Shot Forth Self Living (1992), released on Rick Rubin's American Recordings, bridged the gap between the UK's ethereal textures and the US's burgeoning alternative rock scene. A significant cultural touchstone was their appearance in the 1994 film The Crow, which cemented their association with the era's dark, urban aesthetic. After a mid-90s hiatus and various experimental solo projects by Laner (as Electric Company), the original lineup reunited in 2013, continuing to explore the intersection of pop melody and avant-garde noise. They remain a critical favorite, cited as a primary influence by bands like Swirlies and Lilys for their ability to integrate harsh sonic experimentation into accessible song structures.
