MC Shan (Shawn Moltke) is a pivotal figure in the development of East Coast hip hop, specifically as the lyrical face of the Juice Crew. Emerging from Queensbridge in the mid-1980s, his sound is inextricably linked to the production of his cousin, Marley Marl.
Together, they pioneered the use of sampled drum breaks, moving away from the synthesized sounds of early rap toward the 'boom bap' aesthetic.
