Intro

Listening to Matt Haimovitz feels like being invited into a private, intense conversation between a master and his 1710 Goffriller cello. There is a physical, tactile quality to his playing; you can hear the friction of the bow against the strings and the resonance of the wood. It lacks the polite distance of traditional orchestral recordings, opting instead for a gritty, immediate presence that demands your full attention.

What sets him apart is his refusal to be precious about the canon. He treats a Jimi Hendrix solo with the same intellectual rigor as a Bach suite, and he is just as likely to perform in a smoky jazz club as a prestigious hall. This crossover isn't a gimmick; it is a genuine exploration of what the cello can do when stripped of its formal tuxedo and allowed to breathe in the real world.

Start with 'Anthem' for his bold, solo reinterpretations of American icons, or dive into his 'Bach: The Cello Suites' for a more traditional but no less vibrant display of his technical brilliance. It is music for people who love the history of classical music but hate the stuffiness that often surrounds it.
