Matt Bianco

Slick, jet-set pop with a bossa nova heartbeat. Sophisticated 80s grooves that feel like a vintage spy film set in a Mediterranean lounge.

Intro

Matt Bianco sounds like the sonic equivalent of a tailored linen suit. It is music that occupies the elegant intersection of British New Wave and Latin jazz, characterized by breezy percussion, bright horn sections, and a distinctively polished 1980s studio sheen. The sound is inherently mobile and cosmopolitan, evoking images of international travel, high-end lounges, and the effortless cool of a mid-century secret agent.

What makes them truly distinctive is their 'spy-fi' aesthetic. While their contemporaries were leaning into gritty post-punk or heavy industrial sounds, Matt Bianco embraced the kitsch and class of 60s film scores, reinterpreting them through FM synthesis and danceable pop structures. The interplay between Mark Reilly’s smooth, understated vocals and the lush, often ethereal harmonies provided by Basia creates a vocal texture that is both intimate and expansive.

Start with their debut, 'Whose Side Are You On?', to hear the perfect distillation of their early Latin-pop energy. For a more electronic, late-80s experience, 'Indigo' showcases their evolution into a more synth-heavy, club-ready sound while maintaining their signature jazz-inflected sophistication.

Matt Bianco are a British band formed in 1983, performing sophisti-pop, jazz-funk and Latin-flavoured music. From around mid- to late-80s, the group scored a number of internationally charting singles, including "Get Out of Your Lazy Bed", "Whose Side Are You On?", "Half a Minute", "Yeh Yeh" and "Don't Blame It on That Girl". The group's name suggests that Matt Bianco is a person, often assumed to be an alias for the main member and front man Mark Reilly. According to the group, however, Matt is in fact "a made up spy, a secret agent; we loved spy TV themes and film scores; we were really into that 60s spy movie image". Initially, the line-up included Danny White and Basia Trzetrzelewska, who left the band to focus on Basia's solo career, but rejoined Matt Bianco briefly in mid-2000s.
