Matrimony was a pivotal, albeit short-lived, post-punk ensemble emerging from Sydney's inner-city underground in 1988. Formed by bassist Zeb Olsen and vocalist Sybilla Visalli, the band challenged the male-centric Australian rock scene with a sound rooted in DIY experimentation and art-school aesthetics.
Their sonic identity was defined by Olsen's prominent basslines, which served as the melodic anchor for distorted guitar textures and Visalli's sharp, often confrontational vocal delivery. Influenced by both local icons like The Birthday Party and international no-wave and punk acts like Lydia Lunch and The Slits, Matrimony occupied a space between noise rock and post-punk. Their sole full-length release, Kitty Finger (1989), produced by Matthew Bright, remains a cult classic of the era, celebrated for its raw immediacy and refusal to adhere to traditional production standards. Despite their brief tenure, they are recognized for their role in expanding the boundaries of feminist performance and underground rock in Australia.
