Murky Detroit shoegaze that pairs lush, swirling guitar textures with unsettling, obsessive lyrics. A darker, more voyeuristic take on the dream pop aesthetic.
Majesty Crush occupies a unique position in the 1990s American shoegaze scene, hailing from Detroit rather than the coastal hubs. Formed in 1990, the band consisted of David Stroughter, Hobey Echlin, Michael Segal, and Odell Nails III.
While they shared the sonic DNA of British acts like Lush or My Bloody Valentine, their identity was firmly rooted in the darker, more rhythmic traditions of post-punk and new wave, citing Joy Division and The Jesus and Mary Chain as primary influences. Their sound is characterized by Michael Segal's expansive, reverb-drenched guitar work and Stroughter's distinctive baritone, which eschewed the typical shoegaze 'coo' for a more narrative and often unsettling lyrical approach. Stroughter’s lyrics frequently explored themes of celebrity obsession, addiction, and social fringe characters, providing a stark contrast to the genre's usual ethereal concerns. Despite only releasing one full-length album, 'Love 15' (1993), and a handful of EPs, they maintain a cult following for their ability to synthesize the 'Wall of Sound' aesthetic with a gritty, Midwestern sensibility. The band dissolved in 1995, but their influence persists among crate-diggers and fans of the 'American Shoegaze' movement.
