Intro

Mabulu sounds like a block party that spans fifty years of history in a single afternoon. At its heart is the marrabenta rhythm, a fast-paced, guitar-driven style from Mozambique that feels like a cousin to highlife or soukous but with a distinct, sharp-edged swing. The music is anchored by bright, interlocking electric guitar lines and a brass section that adds a warm, celebratory weight to every track.

What makes them truly distinctive is the 'dialogue' in their name. You will hear a veteran crooner delivering a soulful, traditional melody only to be answered by a sharp, rhythmic rap verse in Shangana or Portuguese. This collision of generations creates a sound that is simultaneously rooted in deep heritage and pulsing with the modern energy of Maputo's streets. It is music that refuses to choose between the past and the future.

Start with the album Soul Marrabenta. It perfectly captures their ability to blend acoustic warmth with urban grit. It is the kind of record that makes you want to move while also demanding you pay attention to the stories being told in the lyrics.

Mabulu is a band from Mozambique. Their name means "looking for a dialogue" in the Shangana language - a reference to the fact that the group comprises members from different generations. Formed in 2000, their debut release was "Karimbo" but the recording of their first album in March that year was seriously affected by the heavy rains and cyclones along the Mozambican coast. In solidarity with the thousands of victims of the floods, they instead performed for disaster relief efforts. Their second release, Soul Marrabenta (Riverboat), came a year later. Lead singer Chonyl died in Maputo in September 2007, aged 27.
