Lycia

Submerged, wintery soundscapes defined by whispered vocals and a shimmering wall of guitars. Ethereal darkwave for moments of deep, solitary reflection.

Intro

Lycia sounds like the physical manifestation of a cold, grey afternoon. Their music is built on a foundation of slow, doomy drum machine patterns that feel like a distant heartbeat, buried under layers of guitars so heavily processed they resemble an icy wind rather than a stringed instrument. It is a sound that feels both massive and incredibly intimate, like being inside a cathedral made of frozen fog.

What truly sets them apart is Mike VanPortfleet's vocal delivery. Eschewing the operatic or aggressive tendencies of their gothic peers, he utilizes a close-mic'd whisper that feels like a secret being told directly into your ear. When Tara Vanflower joined, her vivid, soaring voice added a melodic counterpoint that transformed their bleak isolation into something more spectral and dreamlike, creating a unique tension between the earthbound and the celestial.

If you are new to their world, start with the album Cold. It is the definitive statement of their aesthetic, capturing the perfect balance between their ambient origins and their more structured darkwave songwriting. It is the ideal companion for those who find beauty in desolation and comfort in the quietest, darkest corners of the human experience.

Lycia is an American dark wave band formed in 1988 in Tempe, Arizona. The main personnel of the band are Mike VanPortfleet, Tara VanFlower and David Galas. Although only achieving minor cult success, the band is notable for being one of the ground breaking groups in darkwave and ethereal wave styles. Their 1995 album The Burning Circle and Then Dust received some attention for the power pop hit song "Pray" and "remains a high point of American dark rock", according to AllMusic. Lycia's music is characterized by rich soundscapes and layers of echoed guitars, dark and ethereal keyboards, doomy drum machine beats, VanPortfleet's melancholic, whispered vocals and Vanflower's vivid voice. Peter Steele from Type O Negative hailed Lycia as ‘the most depressing thing I’ve ever heard in my life’.
