LUMP

LUMP is the collaborative project of Grammy-nominated folk artist Laura Marling and Mike Lindsay, a founding member of the acid-folk collective Tunng. Formed in 2018 after meeting at a Neil Young concert, the duo serves as a creative escape from their primary musical identities.

Lindsay provides the 'LUMP' sound: a dense, rhythmic bed of Moog synthesizers, flutes, and cyclical basslines. Marling provides the 'LUMP' voice: a deadpan, often multi-tracked delivery of lyrics that eschew her typical narrative style in favor of surrealism, psychoanalysis, and wordplay. Their 2018 self-titled debut established a sound that critics compared to the avant-pop of Stereolab and the electronic textures of The Notwist. Their 2021 follow-up, 'Animal', expanded this palette with higher production values and more aggressive grooves. Within the UK indie scene, LUMP represents a successful bridge between the Margate-based electronic community and the London folk revival. They are highly regarded for their refusal to follow traditional pop structures, instead opting for hypnotic, loop-based compositions that reward deep, headphone-based listening.
