Angular post-punk meets avant-garde jazz. Linder Sterling's piercing vocals and jagged guitars create a challenging, intellectual, and deeply rewarding atmosphere.

Intro

Ludus occupies a singular space in the Manchester post-punk explosion of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Formed by the multidisciplinary artist Linder Sterling, the band was never content with the three-chord simplicity of their peers.

Their sound identity is defined by a rigorous intersection of art-school experimentation, feminist critique, and avant-garde jazz. While they shared a label (New Hormones) and a city with the Buzzcocks, Ludus pursued a much more difficult and rewarding path, incorporating atonal saxophone, complex time signatures, and Linder's wide-ranging vocal acrobatics. Their career arc saw them move from the scratchy, no-wave adjacent energy of their early singles toward the more lush, almost chamber-pop textures of their later work, though they never lost their sharp, confrontational edge. Culturally, they are often cited as a 'musician's band,' famously championed by Morrissey and recognized as a precursor to the Riot Grrrl movement and the more experimental end of indie rock. Critical consensus views them as one of the most underrated acts of the era, a bridge between the raw energy of punk and the intellectual rigor of the avant-garde.
