Louise Attaque is a pivotal figure in the French alternative scene, emerging in the mid-1990s as a bridge between traditional chanson and the raw energy of American folk-punk. Formed by Gaëtan Roussel and Robin Feix, the band's identity was solidified by the addition of Arnaud Samuel’s violin, which replaced the need for a traditional lead guitar.
Their 1997 debut, produced by Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes, became a cultural phenomenon in France, selling millions of copies through word-of-mouth and relentless touring rather than traditional media saturation. Their sound is characterized by a minimalist, acoustic-driven palette that emphasizes rhythm and lyrical wit. Over their career, they have oscillated between stripped-back folk and more experimental, electronic-tinged rock (as seen on 'Anomalie'), but they remain defined by their signature 'acoustic attack.' They are widely credited with revitalizing the use of violin in modern rock and remain one of the most successful and respected acts in the 'rock français' canon.
