Intro

Listening to Los Super Seven feels like being invited to the world's most talented family reunion. The music is anchored by the wheezing, joyful squeeze of the accordion and the steady thrum of the bajo sexto, but it is constantly reaching outward. It is a sound that lives on the border, comfortably shifting between Spanish and English, tradition and innovation, without ever losing its earthy, organic heart.

What makes this collective distinctive is the sheer density of talent and the way they treat the studio like a communal living room. You can hear the mutual respect in the way David Hidalgo's guitar weaves around Flaco Jimenez's accordion, or how Joe Ely's dusty country croon complements Ruben Ramos's soulful Tejano power. It is a masterclass in collaborative ego-checking, where the song and the heritage always take center stage.

Start with their self-titled debut for the definitive Tex-Mex experience, then move to Canto to hear them explore deeper Afro-Latin and pan-American rhythms. It is music that demands a cold drink, good company, and a total lack of hurry.

Los Super Seven is an American supergroup which debuted in 1998. According to Allmusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine, "Los Super Seven isn't a band, per se – it's a collective, organized by manager Dan Goodman, who comes up with a concept for each of the group's albums and assembles a band to fit." The collective has released three albums to date, with wildly varying personnel. Only Ruben Ramos and Rick Trevino are featured on all three releases. The group won a Grammy Award for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album in 1999 for its self-titled album. Their musical style has changed with each incarnation, blending sounds from Tejano, mariachi, Cuban, Afro-Peruvian, Brazilian, blues, rhythm and blues, country, jazz, and rock. The personnel included the members of Texas Tornados, Los Lobos, Calexico, Ozomatli, and others.
