Dense walls of guitar noise paired with a hauntingly still, deadpan vocal. Sharp-witted Spanish indie that finds the dark humor in everyday frustration.
Imagine a band that sounds like a shimmering, distorted tidal wave of noise, but at the center of the storm stands a vocalist who refuses to move or emote. That is the essence of Los Punsetes. Their sound is built on a massive foundation of layered electric guitars that lean into the 'wall of sound' aesthetic, creating a lush but abrasive backdrop for some of the most clever writing in modern Spanish music.
What truly sets them apart is the juxtaposition between their high-energy, almost shoegaze-adjacent instrumentation and Ariadna Paniagua's iconic deadpan delivery. While the music surges with punk energy and melodic hooks, the vocals remain stoic, delivering lines that are by turns hilariously cynical, deeply relatable, and brutally honest about the absurdities of modern life and social dynamics.
Start with 'Aniquilación' or 'LP2' to hear their evolution from raw indie-pop to a more sophisticated, heavy-hitting sound. They are the perfect choice for when you want music that feels intellectually sharp but sonically overwhelming, capturing that specific feeling of being an observer in a chaotic world.
Los Punsetes is a Spanish indie pop band formed in Madrid in 2004. Named after the late politician, science communicator and television presenter Eduard Punset, its members consisting of university friends Manuel Sánchez (aka Anntona) (guitar), Ariadna Paniagua (vocals), Chema González (drums), Jorge García (guitar) and Gonzalo Prada (bass). Luis Fernández Sanz replaced Prada on bass in 2014. They released their first LP in 2008, and are now regarded as among the most important and iconic figures in the Spanish indie scene. The band is notable for its biting and acidic satirical lyrics. Tracks such as "Tus Amigos" and "Maricas" have anthemic status for their generation in Spain. Vocalist Ariadna is a fashion designer who make a new dress for every concert the band plays, and remains motionless throughout the band's "wall of sound" performance.
