Letters to Cleo

High-velocity alternative rock with caffeinated vocals and crunchy guitar hooks. The sound of a 90s coming-of-age movie montage played at double speed.

Intro

Letters to Cleo sounds like a burst of kinetic energy captured in a three-minute pop song. It is defined by Kay Hanley's distinctive, rapid-fire vocal delivery, which often feels like it is barely keeping pace with the band's driving, distorted guitars. The music balances the grit of the Boston underground with a sugary, melodic sensibility that makes every chorus feel like an anthem.

What truly sets them apart is the interplay between the rhythm section's tight, almost ska-influenced precision and the wall of jangling, overdriven guitars. While many of their 90s peers leaned into grunge's slacker aesthetic, Letters to Cleo maintained a sharp, caffeinated focus. Their songs are structurally sophisticated but emotionally direct, favoring bright textures and high-register hooks over brooding atmosphere.

Start with 'Aurora Gory Alice' to hear the band at their most essential. It contains their biggest hit, 'Here & Now', and perfectly encapsulates the transition from college rock to the mainstream alternative explosion. It is the ideal entry point for anyone who loves the intersection of power-pop melody and indie-rock muscle.

Letters to Cleo is an American alternative rock band originating from Boston, Massachusetts, best known for the 1994 single, "Here & Now", from their full-length debut album, Aurora Gory Alice which topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and peaked at 56 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band's members are Kay Hanley, Greg McKenna, Michael Eisenstein, Stacy Jones, Scott Riebling, and later, Tom Polce and Joe Klompus. The group disbanded in 2000 but reunited for a small tour in 2008. In 2016, the band reunited, and on October 14, 2016, released an EP, titled Back to Nebraska. In 2025, Jeff Mezydlo of Yardbarker included the band in his list of "20 underrated bands from the 1990s who are worth rediscovering".
