High-velocity alternative rock with caffeinated vocals and crunchy guitar hooks. The sound of a 90s coming-of-age movie montage played at double speed.
Letters to Cleo sounds like a burst of kinetic energy captured in a three-minute pop song. It is defined by Kay Hanley's distinctive, rapid-fire vocal delivery, which often feels like it is barely keeping pace with the band's driving, distorted guitars. The music balances the grit of the Boston underground with a sugary, melodic sensibility that makes every chorus feel like an anthem.
What truly sets them apart is the interplay between the rhythm section's tight, almost ska-influenced precision and the wall of jangling, overdriven guitars. While many of their 90s peers leaned into grunge's slacker aesthetic, Letters to Cleo maintained a sharp, caffeinated focus. Their songs are structurally sophisticated but emotionally direct, favoring bright textures and high-register hooks over brooding atmosphere.
Start with 'Aurora Gory Alice' to hear the band at their most essential. It contains their biggest hit, 'Here & Now', and perfectly encapsulates the transition from college rock to the mainstream alternative explosion. It is the ideal entry point for anyone who loves the intersection of power-pop melody and indie-rock muscle.
