Gritty, high-octane garage funk with a heavy Hammond organ bite. It is raw, rhythmic, and built for rooms where people aren't afraid to sweat.
Lefties Soul Connection sounds like a 1970s funk 45 that was left in a dusty basement and played until the grooves started to smoke. Their sound is defined by a relentless, heavy-hitting rhythm section and an organ that growls more than it sings. It is the kind of music that feels immediate and physical, stripping away the polish of modern soul to get back to the grit of the garage.
What makes them truly distinctive is the way they bridge the gap between the classic syncopation of The Meters and the aggressive energy of garage rock. While many funk revivalists aim for a clean, polite sound, the Lefties lean into the distortion. Their drums are loud and dry, their basslines are thick, and their guitar work has a jagged edge that feels more like a punk band playing James Brown covers.
Start with 'Hutspot' to hear them at their most instrumental and raw. It is a masterclass in the 'deep funk' movement of the 2000s, showcasing their ability to turn a simple groove into a high-intensity workout. If you want a bit more vocal variety, 'One Punch Pete' brings in guest singers without losing the band's signature punchy backbone.
Lefties Soul Connection are a Dutch funk band from Amsterdam. The band was formed by guitarist Onno Smit and organist Alviz in August 2001, with Cody Vogel joining on drums by the end of the year. Bram Bosman joined as full-time bassist early in 2002, as the group solidified a mostly instrumental sound influenced by The Meters and Booker T & the MGs. They began releasing 45rpm singles on Melting Pot Music, including a cover version of DJ Shadow's "Organ Donor". Their debut full-length, Hutspot, arrived in 2006, with a follow-up, Skimming the Skum, released in 2007. The group toured with Hind Laroussi in 2009.
