Laufer is a seminal Croatian alternative rock band formed in 1986 in Rijeka, a city known for its industrial heritage and vibrant punk/rock scene. The band's classic lineup featured vocalist Damir Urban, guitarist Vlado Simčić (Vava), bassist Ljubo Silić, and drummer Alen Tibljaš.
They rose to national prominence in the early 1990s, effectively bridging the gap between the Yugoslav New Wave of the 80s and the burgeoning alternative rock movement. Their sound is characterized by a blend of Seattle-style grunge, psychedelic rock, and art-rock sensibilities, anchored by Urban's distinctive, theatrical baritone. Their 1994 album 'Pustinje' is widely considered a masterpiece of the era, showcasing a move toward more complex arrangements and abstract lyrical themes. Despite their short initial tenure, Laufer's influence on the regional rock scene is immense, particularly in establishing Rijeka as a center for 'darker' alternative sounds. Following their 1996 split, Damir Urban transitioned into a highly successful solo career (Urban & 4), continuing the sonic explorations begun in Laufer.
