Gritty, soulful Argentine rock that balances heavy guitar riffs with deep reggae grooves. Atmospheric, melancholic, and built for stadium-sized singalongs.
Las Pelotas sounds like the intersection of a smoky Buenos Aires dive bar and the wide-open landscapes of the Sierras de Cordoba. Their music is rooted in a sturdy, mid-tempo rock foundation, but it is constantly elevated by a sophisticated sense of space. You will hear the ghost of post-punk in the driving basslines, but it is softened by warm analog synths and a recurring reggae skank that gives the songs a unique, rhythmic breathing room.
What truly sets them apart is their emotional weight. While their peers in the 'Rock Nacional' scene often lean into frantic energy, Las Pelotas excels at the slow burn. Their melodies are often bittersweet, delivered with a raspy, weathered vocal authority that feels like a conversation with an old friend who has seen it all. The production is lush and layered, favoring organic textures over digital sheen.
Start with 'Esperando el milagro' to hear them at their commercial and creative peak. It perfectly captures their ability to turn existential longing into massive, cathartic anthems. From there, dive into 'Corderos en la noche' to hear their raw, post-Sumo beginnings where the reggae and punk influences are most visible.
Las Pelotas (in English: The Balls, or more idiomatically, Bollocks!, since the band name is a play of words between those two meanings); is an Argentine rock and reggae band from Córdoba. This band was formed after the separation of Sumo, due to the death of their singer, Luca Prodan in 1987. The group currently consists of vocalist and guitarist, Germán Daffunchio, Gabriela Martínez on bass, Tomás Sussman on guitar, Sebastián Schachtel on keyboards and Gustavo Jove on drums. Their original vocalist, Alejandro Sokol, was part of the band from 1988 to 2008 as he began a solo career, cut short by his sudden death in 2009. The musical style of the band is an eclectic genre mix of rock, pop, reggae, funk and ballads.
