Lankum

Lankum is a Dublin-based four-piece that has fundamentally redefined the boundaries of Irish traditional music in the 21st century. Originally forming as a folk-punk duo called Lynched, the band evolved into a sophisticated avant-folk ensemble that incorporates elements of drone, krautrock, and ambient music into a traditional framework.

Their sound identity is built on the 'wall of sound' approach to acoustic instruments, particularly the use of uilleann pipes and harmonium to create sustained, dissonant drones that mirror the intensity of industrial or doom metal. Critically, they are seen as the leaders of a new wave of Irish folk (alongside peers like Lisa O'Neill and ØXN) that rejects the commercialized 'Celtic' aesthetic in favor of a darker, more socially conscious, and sonically adventurous realism.
