Lanie Lane

Sun-drenched rockabilly and smoky blues delivered with a mid-century wink. It is the sound of a 1950s jukebox brought to life by a modern Australian soul.

Intro

Lanie Lane sounds like a technicolor dream of the 1950s, where the grit of the Mississippi Delta meets the polished charm of a jazz-age starlet. Her music is built on the foundation of warm, hollow-body guitar tones and the rhythmic snap of an upright bass, creating a sound that feels both impeccably vintage and startlingly fresh. There is a tactile, analog quality to her recordings that makes you feel the vibration of the strings and the breath in her lungs.

What truly sets her apart is the playful dichotomy in her voice. She can pivot from a honeyed, Doris Day-inspired croon to a raw, gravelly blues growl in a single phrase. Her use of free-form scatting and her deep connection to her instruments - specifically her beloved vintage guitars - gives the music a personality that most retro-revivalists lack. It is music that wears its influences on its sleeve but delivers them with a cheeky, modern Australian sensibility.

Start with her debut album, 'To the Horses'. It perfectly captures her ability to blend high-energy rockabilly stompers with intimate, late-night torch songs. It is the ideal entry point for anyone who loves the aesthetic of the mid-century but wants the emotional urgency of a contemporary songwriter.

Lanie Lane (born 11 February 1987) is the stage name of Lanier Stefanie Myra Johnston, an Australian blues-jazz singer-songwriter and guitarist. Lane released two studio albums between 2011 and 2014. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2012, Lane was nominated for five awards. In February 2015, Lane announced she was "quitting" the music industry. Lane used a 1957 guitar named Betty, a 1966 electric Gibson named BoDidd (after Bo Diddley) and an unnamed 1960 archtop guitar. The album track, "Betty Baby", is dedicated to the guitar.
