Lakes, the Atascadero, California project led by Seth Roberts, represents a significant stylistic evolution from Roberts' previous work in the pop-punk outfit Watashi Wa. Formed in 2006, the band transitioned away from the high-energy punk of the Tooth & Nail era toward a more sophisticated, melodic indie rock sound.
Signing with The Militia Group, they released the Photographs EP, which solidified their place in the mid-2000s 'indie-emo' landscape alongside bands like Copeland and The Early November. Their sound is defined by clean electric guitar textures, prominent piano, and a focus on vocal harmony. After a period of activity that included the 2010 full-length The Agreement, the band reclaimed their original intended name, Eager Seas, in 2015. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the earnestness of second-wave emo and the polished production of 2000s alternative rock. Their influence is felt primarily in the niche of 'grown-up' emo, where songwriting maturity and melodic complexity take precedence over aggression.
