High-energy Australian rock that hops between fuzz-drenched riffs and funky, breakbeat-driven pop. Restless, rhythmic, and built for the front row of a festival.
Kram’s solo work feels like a chaotic, brilliant late-night radio broadcast where the DJ is obsessed with every genre at once. It carries the raw, percussive DNA of his work in Spiderbait but stretches it into unexpected shapes: Prince-inspired soul, dusty country ballads, and glitchy pop. The sound is anchored by his unmistakable drumming, which provides a muscular, driving foundation even for the more experimental tracks.
What makes this music distinctive is the sense of a one-man-band having the time of his life. There is a palpable liberation in the way he layers fuzzy guitars over breakbeats or drops a falsetto vocal into a garage rock stomper. It’s music that refuses to sit still, characterized by a 'mix tape' philosophy that values the thrill of the pivot over the safety of a consistent genre.
Start with the album Mix Tape to hear the full breadth of this restless creativity. It captures a specific moment in Australian alternative music where the lines between rock, electronic, and pop were blurring, all filtered through the lens of one of the country's most iconic rhythmic architects.
Mark Anthony Maher, better known by his stage name Kram, is an Australian musician and the drummer and singer of Spiderbait. His stage name is an anagram of his first name; "Kram" is simply "Mark" spelled backwards. Kram has appeared at the 2005 benefit concert for the South-East Asian tsunami, WaveAid, as a member of supergroup the Wrights who performed Stevie Wright's three-part classic, "Evie". His debut solo album, Mix Tape, was released on 13 March 2009. He has made guest appearances on the television shows' Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation and Good News Week, both on Network Ten, and Spicks & Specks on the ABC.
