Kosheen emerged from the fertile Bristol electronic scene in the late 1990s, bridging the gap between the city's trip-hop legacy and the high-energy world of drum and bass. Formed by producers Markee Ledge and Darren Beale (Decoder) alongside vocalist Sian Evans, the trio achieved significant commercial success with their 2001 debut 'Resist.'
This era was defined by their ability to translate the frantic energy of jungle into structured, radio-friendly songs without sacrificing the sub-bass weight or technical complexity of the genre. Their evolution saw a pivot toward alternative rock on 'Kokopelli' (2003), incorporating darker, more guitar-driven textures that aligned them with the moody electronica of peers like Lamb or Faithless. Critically, they are respected for their live performances, which utilize a full band to reinterpret studio-slick electronic tracks with raw, percussive energy. Their influence persists in the 'vocal DnB' subgenre, proving that breakbeat-driven music could sustain the emotional weight of a traditional singer-songwriter format.
